Underwater archeologists have found a unique ancient coin - half a grivna - on the bed of River Volkhov in Veliky Novgorod.
According to scientists, it is a rare find - it can be tentatively dated to the 13th or 15th century.
Such coins, as well as grivnas, were used in Old Russia for payment of the most important deals. The coin is a fine silver rectangular bar about one and a half centimeters wide and eight centimeters long.
Underwater archaeological works in the Volkhov River were started in March of this year, and by now researchers have found about 60 various coins, a number of axes, fragments of ancient fresco painting, as well as a metal device for writing and a metal bag plate.
In 2013 the investigation of the Volkhov riverbed will be most likely continued.
