Dynamo Moscow has won the Gagarin Cup for the first time, in the deciding match against Avangard Omsk 1:0.
Now Dynamo Moscow are the new KHL champions and the first team from the Russian capital to bag the Gagarin Cup.
Avangard were one step away from triumph, taking a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series after two wins away in Moscow. But Dynamo showed great character by leveling matters in the tie and pushing it into the last game.
The Gagarin Cup's fate was decided by a single goal from Dynamo's Jakub Klepis in the middle of the third period of game seven.
Both teams made few defensive mistakes in the game played in an electric atmosphere in front of a sell-out crowd in the Omsk Arena.
Goaltender Alexander Yeryomenko, named play-off MVP, dedicated the win to Lokomotiv players who perished in the plane crash in Yaroslavl in September.
During the previous three years of the KHL’s existence, the title was owned by Salavat Yulaev Ufa and Ak Bars Kazan, who lifted it twice.
