Torchlight Parade in Memory of WWII Medics

On Thursday, students of a Moscow medical university took part in a traditional torchlight procession dedicated to the medical professionals who served at the front in World War II.

The procession started at 9 pm in front of the Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry. About 1,000 students in white gowns proceeded along the Garden Ring to the old University's building from which medical students departed for the front in 1941. The University's chancellor, Oleg Yanushevich, lighted himself 65 torchlights that symbolized students and teachers perished in the the Great Patriotic War.

Several Moscow streets were closed because of the action, which caused some short-term jams. The procession was ended by a mourning meeting.

The tradition of such torchlight processions has been held in early May every year since 2005. However, this year it was given sudden controversy, when some human rights advocates said it is too reminiscent of the torchlight parades staged in Nazi Germany. The procession's organizers didn't comment on these complaints and the action was held in its traditional way.
