Highway department of the Vladimir Region administration has announced a tender for carrying out excavations on the site.
The scientists are offered nearly 12 million rubles for research of the Verbovsky burial ground and the ancient settlement site in the Murom District.
“It is a unique object dated to the 7th-11th centuries of this era. It is a great fortune for historians that the burial ground and the Finno-Ugric settlement have been found - said Natalia Nesterova, the leading expert of the state inspectorate for protection of cultural heritage sites. It is a pity, of course, that one has to sacrifice this place for road construction. But there is no other way out. By November 15 scientists will thoroughly study the site and carry out all possible research.
It is remarkable that the last find in the site of the burial ground was unearthed in 1990. That time a local dweller happened to find an ancient grave. As for high-grade archeological excavations, they were carried out in 1910 — the settlement and cemetery were found then.
