The Olympic Games in Vancouver turned into a disaster for the Russian team: instead of the 30-50 planned medals it only managed to win 15. At the same time the support team including officials from the Russian Olympic Committee had a ball partying on vodka and whisky. So the story goes.
The Games are on again in just two month's time, so the Government decided to act early: an official ban is extended on the entire London 2012 team, the Sochi 2014 committee, and even Bosco di Ciliegi who design and supply the team's outfit. In the words of a member of the Russian London Olympic staff, "alcohol is incompatible with Olympic values".
In the recent months the Russian Government were adamant to suppress excessive drinking and smoking. Buying alcohol from the shops is prohibited between 11pm and 8am, and as of 2013 drinking in public parks and gardens will also be prohibited. As for smoking, the Government is about to vote on the bill banning smoking in cafes, transport stops, long-distance trains, and other public places.
