Russian hockey team has defeated Slovakia in the World Championships final, 6-2, and has gained the third ice hockey world title in five years.
The Slovaks opened the scoring a minute and six seconds into the first period, with a hit from the Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara.
But Russians didn't get confused and responded 10 minutes later with a goal by Aleksandr Syomin. And right after the interval Aleksandr Perezhogin, Aleksey Tereshchenko and again Aleksandr Syomin helped the Russians to widen the gap.
The third period was opened by Pavel Datsyuk's to steer under Hamerlik, the fifth goal from Russia. Slovakia didn't plan to give up and with ten minutes left to play Zdeno Chara reduced the deficit to three goals after converting a powerplay. But Russia soon drove the final nail into the Slovak coffin, when Evgeny Malkin scored the last goal in the game and so estimated the final result - 6-2.
Being an unquestionable favourite and 2003, 2008 and 2009 World title holder, the Red Machine has become the only unbeaten team in this year's tournament, while Slovakia has become the biggest surprise of the championship with unexpected wins over Canada and the Czech Republic.
Evgeny Malkin was named the Most Valuable Player - MVP - in the championship and gained his personal cup. Russian head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov dedicated the team's world title to the perished "Lokomotiv" hockey team.
Hundreds of Russian ice hockey fans celebrated the team's victory on the cities' streets, in pubs, clubs and other public places all night long.
Earlier in the day, the Czech Republic staved off a late comeback by Finland to win 3-2 and seal the bronze medal, which means co-hosts Finland was left without medals at all after being 2011 World Champions.
