Mixed fight legend, Fyodor ‘The Last Emperor’ Emelianenko has become the president of the newly established Russian MMA Union.
The organization's first congress gathered over 100 delegates from 50 Russian regions, as well as members of FILA (International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles) and distinguished guests from over 20 countries of the world. Fedor Emelianenko was elected unanimously.
"I’m very grateful to the people who elected me,” Fyodor said. “MMA doesn’t exist as a sports discipline in Russia, as it is all down to work of enthusiasts at the moment. But there are more and more people who want to practice mixed martial arts every day.”
Besides the president's elections, Union's presidium approved an application for holding the MMA World Championship this year in St. Petersburg, on November 1. It is expected to gather sportsmen from more than 50 countries.
Being elected as the Union's president, Fyodor Emelianenko is still a professional fighter. His next fight is scheduled on June 2 in St. Petersburg, against Pedro Rizzo. Earlier Emelianenko said that would be his last duel in pro career.
"I think it's time for me to leave", he told the press, "I must spend more time with my family. Before every fight I promise to my wife that it will be the last one, but then always persuade her for another. But I feel it becomes harder for me to recover after the fight. So it's time to have a rest."
Emelianenko’s record in the ring and cage is now 33 wins, four losses and one no-contest.
