Russian football team remain at the top of Group A after their clash with Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland ended in a 1-1 draw.
The match was played in a tense atmosphere because of mass clashes before the game involving Russian and Polish fans. The planned Russian supporters’ march to the stadium was marred by several provocations from local hooligans. The Polish police had to use fire warnings and water cannons. Three people were seriously injured, about 100 football fans were arrested.
The 50,000-strong National Stadium was packed for the match, but no incidents between fans inside the arena were reported.
Both teams were equally right in their playing tactics. It was the Poles who created the first big chances of the night, bur the first effective moment was made by Russians, when Alan Dzagoev, Russia’s two-goal hero in their opening win over the Czechs, darted forward to knock in Andrei Arshavin’s corner and put Russia ahead on 37 minutes.
Poland striker and the team's captain Robert Blaszczykowski evened the scores on 57 minutes, when successfully finished a speedy move with an unstoppable blast from the edge of the box.
Both teams created dangerous moments till the 90th minute, but none of them became a goal, so the game ended with 1-1 draw result.
Russia remain top of Group A with four points after two games. The the Czech Republic occupies the second place with three points after win over Greece.
The fate of the play-off spots will be decided on June 16 when Dick Advocaat’s men play Greece and Poland take on the Czech Republic.
