It is hardly believable that in the heritage of the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky there are still compositions little known to general public.
Among them is the rarely performed opera Charodeika (The Enchantress, The Sorceress) that the Bolshoi Theater has staged at the end of the theatrical season. The dress rehearsal of the half-forgotten masterpiece which took place last Saturday, gathered a full house and was crowned with a 10-minute ovation.
Charodeika based on the tragedy by the well-known playwright of the 19th century Ippolit Shazhinsky is considered to be Tchaikovsky's low-successful opera. The composer himself, however, was sure of the opposite.
"Never have I worked with such diligence as I worked on Charodeika", - Tchaikovsky admitted and added with hope:" I know that its turn will come some day!"
Premier performances of the opera will be given from June 26 to July 1.
