Police officer Vyacheslav Gorbunov sacrificed his life to rescue people trapped in the floods in the city of Krymsk.
When the deluge hit the city, Gorbunov, a 43-years-old head of the Krymsk's police devision, and all his colleagues tried to rescue people by taking them out from their flooded houses. In particular, Gorbunov found a boat and used it to ferry residents to safety from the rising waters.
However, tragedy struck after Gorbunov entered one of the houses where a local family was sleeping. He woke up the parents, then took two small children and carried them to a safe place. He went back to collect their relatives, phoned to his wife to say he was alright. Several seconds later a huge wave capsized his boat, drowning the officer.
The Russian Interior Ministry has said it will award the deceased officer a state award in recognition of his bravery.
Several towns and villages were swept by devastating floods in Russia’s southern Krasnodar Region, 171 people were killed, most of them failed to leave their flooded houses, because waves went too fast.
