St. Petersburg is getting ready for an unprecedented International Festival Opera For All.
The open-air music festival to be held in St. Petersburg on July 12-23 will try to set opera plots into the natural architectural "scenery" of the Northern capital of Russia.
M.I. Glinka's opera Life for the Tsar will be performed in the Cathedral Square of St. Peter and Paul Fortress, in the vicinity of the sepulchers of Russian emperors. Tchaikovsky's Iolanta with its knightly plot will best fit into the yard of Mikhaylovsky Palace. Snow Maiden by Rimsky-Korsakov will look good among the sights of Yelagin Island, where public festivities are often held.
The festival will be crowned with a gala concert at the Arts Square. Free admission is guaranteed to all comers.
As the musical director head of the festival, conductor Fabio Mastrangelo reported, musicians and soloists of the Mariinsky Theater, Mikhaylovsky Theater, Zazerkalye, Opera and Ballet Theater, and St. Petersburg Conservatory are involved in the performances.
According to him, such project is the only one in the world and it will unfold in a new way the beauty of St. Petersburg, where lots of great Russian operas were born and began their scenic life.
