On Saturday, July 16, Rubin Kazan won the season-opening Russian Super Cup, beating league winners Zenit St. Petersburg 2-0.
The first match in the 2012/13 Russian football season was held in the city of Samara, which welcomed guests with a real summer heat of over 30 degrees Celsius.
The both goals were scored in the first half of the match. The score was opened on 28th minute with Salvatore Bocchetti powering into the box and heading Roman Eremenko's cross into the bottom corner.
And 10 minutes later Rubin doubled their lead as Aleksandr Ryazantsev’s cross found Vladimir Dyadyun in the opponent’s box, 2-0.
Zenit tried to create moments and to increase striking force, but Rubin were so tight at the back well that the second 45 minutes of the game became just a formality.
It was a second Super Cup for Rubin, who first took it in 2010 after the second of their back-to-back titles. It is also just the second time in the nine-year history of the trophy that the champions were beaten by the cup winners.
The Russian Premier League starts July 20. Zenit first face Amkar Perm on July 22, with Rubin travel.
