Sting Speaks up for Pussy Riot
Sting Voices Hope for Release of Pussy Riot

The British rock star Sting has urged to release members of the Pussy Riot punk band who have been kept in custody since February for their protest performance in Christ the Saviour Cathedral.

“It’s appalling that the musicians from Pussy Riot could face prison sentences of up to seven years in jail. Dissent is a legitimate and essential right in any democracy and modern politicians must accept this fact with tolerance. A sense of proportion - and a sense of humour - is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness”, - declared Sting as cited by the Amnesty International on Wednesday.

“Surely the Russian authorities will completely drop these spurious charges and allow the women, these artists, to get back to their lives and to their children”, - the musician voiced hope.

Sting is not the first world star to have supported Pussy Riot. It was also done earlier by Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Franz Ferdinand. On Monday the Red Hot Chili Peppers wrote a letter to the arrested girls. “Nadia, Katya and Masha, we love and support you and we are here to help you” – Nadezhda Tolokonnikova’s husband Pyotr Verzilov quoted Anthony Kiedis’ letter.

Besides,
Anthony Kiedis was wearing a Pussy Riot T-shirt at his recent shows in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The trial procedure has been scheduled for July 30, 2012 and it is going to be a public hearing with online live broadcasting on the official website of the
Khamovnichesky Court.
