July 29, the second Olympics day, was marked by Russia's fencer, cyclist and swimmers team to bring a bronze medal each.
Nikolai Kovalev took a fencing bronze for Russia in the men's individual saber, beating Romania's Rares Dumitrescu in the match for the third place. He raced to a 4-0 lead and held on to his advantage all the way to sealing a 15-10 win.
The sportsman said he is pleased with his bronze medal. “Third place is better than second, as you’re still a winner after all,” he told the press.
Also on Sunday, July 29, Russian cyclist, Olga Zabelinskaya won the bronze medal at the London Games, coming up with an unexpected third place finish in the road race.
The race took place in very difficult rainy conditions. Still, the leading trio managed to create a 30-second gap, making the rest of the pack forget about the podium. Zabelinskaya succeed in holding on to this advantage, though she was passed by Britain’s Elizabeth Armitstead in a sprint finish, which brought her only the bronze medal.
“I’m very happy with this medal,” the 32-year-old Zabelinskaya told the press. "“Somewhere deep inside I hoped that it would be possible."
The third bronze medal in a Russia's coin box was brought by men's swimming team, which have claimed the third place in the 4x100m freestyle relay, after France and U.S.A.
Russia put out a talented team including Beijing silver medalist Nikita Lobintsev, who was joined by Andrey Grechin, Vladimir Morozov and Danila Izotov. They made an 3 minutes and 11,41 seconds result, which is 1,48 seconds worse than the French team and 0,45 seconds - than the Americans. The Australian team, which previously had been called the race's favourite, only took the fourth place.
After two days of action in London the Russian team has one gold and three bronze medals.
