Saturday, the fifth day of the Olympic Games in London, brought good news from Russian fencers, cyclists and synchronized divers.
In the women’s Olympic time trial, Russian cyclist Olga Zabelinskaya, added another medal to the coinbox of Russian Olympic team and also another medal to the one she captured in Sunday's road race.
Zabelinskaya, who wasn't among the favourites of the race, sat sixth with ten kilometers left in the 29-kilometre course, but then extended and managed to finish 22 seconds behind the champion Kristin Armstrong of the United States and seven seconds from silver medalist Judith Arndt of Germany.
At the synchronized diving events on Saturday, Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov of Russia took the silver at 459.63 points. The Russian Olympic debutants found themselves in fifth place after four attempts, but an all-but-perfect performance in their last two jumps along with their program’s highest difficulty level, helped them win the silver, leaving American Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais behind with 446.70 points. Chinese Qin Kai and Luo Yutong settled for the gold at the unachievable height of 477.00 points.
Sofia Velikaya has become Russia’s second fencer to leave London with a medal, after fellow saber-fencer Nikolay Kovalev to win the bronze a few days earlier. In the final of fencing for the women's individual sabre on Wednesday, she fighted against Kim Jiyeon of South Korea.
Velikaya was prepared for the hard battle, but Kim was unexpectedly in control virtually the entire way. After taking a 6-2 lead, she didn’t give second-seeded Velikaya any breathing space, and carried that momentum all the way through the final to eventually win 15-9. Kim Juyeon wins the golden medal, Sofia is on the second place with the silver.
