Archeologists Find Skates, Dice and Idol in Rostov Region
Stone Idols in Tanais

In the place of a future highway near the Azov city of the Rostov Region archeologists have found rare monuments of ancient civilizations: a prototype of modern skates, a stone tribal idol and dice.

Three bone skates that were used by our ancient ancestors to walk on ice with the help of two sticks is the first find of the kind for the Rostov Region.

One of the sensational finds for archeologists is the stone idol found in an ancient well. It is the first artifact of the kind since the time of World War II. The ancient sculpture dates back to the little-studied epoch of the great transmigration of peoples.

Another rare find - dice made of ram bones – dates to the Old Tanais period. The dice set was thoroughly finished for the game: holes were drilled in them and filled with melted lead to add weight to the figurines.
