A big project for creating bicycle lanes started in Moscow. Its main aim is to ensure an opportunity for all citizens and tourists to ride on a bicycle comfortably within the city. The project provides for creating marked and illuminated lanes with parking lots for bicycles and places for rest.
The first bicycle lane in Moscow was created in 2011 and went from the students' hostel of the Moscow State University to other university's buildings. Its length is 7,5 kilometers, with 12 parking lots for 216 bicycles.
Another lane of 21,4 km length will be laid on the territory of the Central and Western administrative districts: from Bolshaya Filyovskaya street to Krymskaya embankment, across Kutuzovsky and Mitchurinsky avenues, along the Kosygin street to the Vorobyevskoye highway with a passage to Vorobyevskaya and Pushkinskaya enbankments of the Moscow-river. An exact date of the opening is not announced yet.
Another bicycle lane will be opened in the "Maryino" amusement park in the beginning of this September. Local authorities also plan to open bicycles hire offices in the park.
Modern bicycle infrastructure is in a very poor condition in Moscow currently. Many citizens want to ride by bicycles within the city but can't afford this because of lack of places for safe and comfortable riding. The new project is expected to solve this problem.
