The Pussy Riot trial has attracted much attention worldwide; however, until recently the religious bodies, other than the Russian Orthodox Church, have barely spoken up on the subject. This led some politicians and pop-stars to conclude that he Muslim faithful would tear the band members into pieces, had anything similar to punk mass been performed at their sacred place.
The representative of the Council of Russian Muftis, a Vologda imam Nail Mustafin became the first non-Christian head who expressed his opinion on the subject - and this is the story he told the Russian media:
"Once a man went into a mosque and had a pee there. Of course, he was captured and taken to Prophet Muhammad who was asked, what should be done to this man. Muhammad's decision was swift: the man should be forgiven and let go, and the floor needs to be washed. This, therefore, is the opinion all faithful Muslims hold. We all think the Pussy Riot girls should be freed and not prosecuted any longer".
He did acknowledge, however, that he would not be surprised had the Pussy Riot girls been burnt at the Red Square for their "heresy". Some witnesses from the prosecution side at the trial did accuse the band members of satanism.
