Russia has proven its dominance in rhythmic gymnastics with the country’s squad claiming gold medal in the group all-around at the London Games.
The Russian team took the lead after the first exercise with five balls and managed to retain leadership after the second routine with three ribbons and two hoops.The Russians scored 57.000 points to gain the gold medal. Silver went to Belarus on 55.500 points, topping third placed Italy by just 0.05 points.
The most spectacular and shocking victory took place in the volleyball pitch this Sunday, as Russia's national volleyball team defeated Brazil by coming back from two sets down to win gold. It is Russia's first ever volleyball gold.
Brazil took the first two sets by convincing margins, 25-19 and 25-20 and had match point in the third at 24-23 up before the Russians fought back to take the set 29-27. Then Russian found their game and closed out the match by winning the fourth set 25-22 and the decider 15-9.
Also on Sunday, Russian boxer Egor Mekhontcev has fought his way to the podium in the men's light heavy category to bring Russia its first and only boxing gold in London, beating Adilbek Niyazymbetov of Kazakhstan.
The bout ended with a 15-15 scoreline, but the judges awarded the gold medal to the more active Mekhontcev.
And the last medal for Russia at the Olympic Games was brought by Russia's basketball team who managed to claim their first Olympic medal in the country’s modern history after beating Argentina 81-77 in the bronze match.
Team Russia have finished fourth in the overall medals count at the London Games, with 24 gold, 25 silver and 33 bronze medals in the bag. It is just one medal short of fulfilling the medal target of 25 golds from the country’s sporting officials, and one gold more than at the previous Games in Beijing 2008. On the whole, Russian sportsmen have made 82 podium appearances.
