The government of Nizhny Novgorod Region plans to develop its potential as a centre of water and family tourism. The Charskoe Lake in Ardatovsky District will become one of the focal points of a new tourist destination in Russia.
The Charskoe Lake has 16 meters in depth and is ideal for diving. The regional government plans to create a specialist Diving Centre here. The south-west of Nizhny Novgorod Region boasts many rivers and lakes, also suitable for kayaking. It is understandable that developing water tourism in the area will now become a priority.
Ardatovsky District also contains many historic sites. Ivan the Terrible army was stationed at Sakony village during the Kazan Campaign of 1552. Nearby is also a neolithic cave once inhabited by prehistoric people. The Charskoe Lake was also on the tentative list for inclusion in the Seven Marvels of Russia.
The government now faces an arduous task of developing the hospitality sector in the region.
