Architects: No Point in Restoring Konigsberg Castle

At a recent round table discussion regarding the restoration of the Konigsberg Castle the majority of professional architects spoke against restoration of the Royal Castle as a historical object.

The issue of restoring the Konigsberg Castle has been discussed among citizens of Kaliningrad and regional authorities since the 1990s. Earlier it was reported that restoration of the Royal Castle was specified as one of the actions in the long-term strategy of social and economic development of the Kaliningrad Region. According to the authorities, the ancient castle in the centre of Kaliningrad should attract a growing inflow of tourists. The cost of restoration works can amount to 180 million euro.

The Konigsberg Castle founded by the Czech king Ottokar II Przhemysl in 1255 existed till 1968. At the end of the war the castle was on fire: during a raid of the British and American airpower in August 1944 and the combat assault on Konigsberg in April 1945; but the main towers and walls still remained by 1956. Despite numerous protests, the Konigsberg Castle was blown up by the Soviet authorities in 1967.
