On Friday, Russian opposition activists applied to the city authorities for the go-ahead to a massive protest march on September 15.
The organizers expect to gather some 50,000 people. The application for a march contains the preliminary route, which is from Belarusskaya Railway Station in the center of the city along Tverskaya Street to Borovitskaya Square where a demonstration to be held.
The demonstrators are expected to speak against electoral fraud and arbitrary decisions by judges. They will also be calling for the release of “political prisoners” and arrested demonstrators, the ceasing of repression and the resignation of Alexander Bastrykin, head of Russia’s Investigative Committee.
Mass demonstrations on September 15 are also planned for almost 50 Russian cities. Opposition leaders have submitted a request for 10,000-person march in St. Petersburg, and provided authorities with a list of three possible venues for the event.
The first March of Millions was held on Moscow's Bolotnaya Square on May 6 2012. It had been authorized by the city government, but it deteriorated into clashes with police, with more than 400 people to be arrested. The second March of Millions was held on June 12 and it drew even more people than the action on Bolotnaya Square. There were no incidents during that rally.
