Borodino Field May Change Hands To Remain a Valuable Historic Site
Louis Lejeune, Battle of Moscow (1822)

According to Minister of Culture of Moscow Region, Borodino Field would need to become an historic object of regional, rather than federal jurisdiction, in order to retain its reserved status.

The procedure of "swapping hands" with the federal government will likely to be a tricky one, hence preparation must be meticulous. The Moscow Region will need to present a grounded argument for the change of status.

Borodino Field saw one of the most remarkable battles in world's and Russian history. It was here that Napoleon's army met with the Russian troops under Mikhail Kutuzov. The battle, commemorated in the world-known War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy,  officially ended with Russian troops retreating from the field. The hard decision made at the famous Counsel at Fili meant that the keys from Moscow were handed to Napoleon. Little did the French emperor know that Muscovites were leaving their city in haste, setting their houses on fire, not even planning to yield to the would-be conqueror. After standing for several weeks in the spot now marked by the Triumphal Arch, Napoleon turned to go back to France - only to experience the harsh Russian winter and losing half of his army to cold and another half - to nervous breakdown and disillusionment. Borodino Battle thus became the example of a brilliant strategic move on the part of Kutuzov and the symbol of moral victory. Its anniversary has just been celebrated in Russia, with special events taking place in Moscow.

However, a few years ago some parts of land on the field had been sold to private developers who built several properties in the historic grounds. The construction was deemed illegal by the court, and the buildings were subsequently demolished. It is with the view to avoid similar situations in the future that the Moscow Region government now plans to initiate the process whereby Borodino will become a regional historical site.
