Aleksandr Ovechkin has become the latest NHL superstar to come back to play in Russia, thanks to NHL's lockout.
The 27-years-old Washington Capitals frontman signed a deal with reigning KHL (Russia's main hockey league) champions Dynamo Moscow.
The contract, attaching the Washington Capitals leader to the Russian side was signed on Wednesday. According to it, Ovechkin’s salary will be no more than two thirds his NHL wage.
Overchkin is a two-time world champion, and has also been named the NHL's most valuable player twice. His comeback to the Russian hockey club was made possible only because of the NHL season's lockout, as the players’ union failed to find common ground with the League on how to divide up the sport's revenue.
Lockout is usually a big present for other countries' leagues, as many NHL stars return to play in their old clubs. For example, the season stoppage brought Russia such ice hockey stars as Ilya Kovalchuk moving to SKA, Evgeny Malkin, Sergey Gonchar and Nikolay Kulemin going to Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Ilya Bryzgalov joining CSKA. Hockey fans still expect returning of Pavel Datsyuk and Nail Yakupov.
