The problem of drunk driving that has recently been tackled by the Government attracted a wide commentary on exactly how drunk a driver may be, and how much drunk driving should be fined.
Russia' s Vice Prime Minister added his two pence worth to the debate. In his opinion, a fine must be "tangible" - up to RUB1mln ($32,246) for drivers from Moscow and St. Petersburg. The two Russian capitals are notorious for traffic jams, driving offences, and the road police bribery. Also in his opinion "responsible drivers" are not even concerned about how many promilles of alcohol they may have - because they never drink, if driving.
The law is presently debated at the State Duma to introduce more severe punishment for drunk drivers. Such drivers may have to pay up to RUB50,000 ($1610) and have their licence taken away for up to 3 years. In case of another offence they may face a 3-year prison sentence.
