With 375 votes against 2 the State Duma adopted additional notes to the treason law. The definition of treason now encompasses the provision of help and consultations to the foreign countries, bodies and representatives thereof, if such parties are known to commit acts undermining Russia's security.
Previously by treason was meant an espionage or declaration of the state secret to the enemy, as well as providing assistance to the hostile party. The deputies expanded on the notion of "help": it now includes financial, material and technical assistance and consultations.
At the same time, upon a suggestion from one of the Duma committees, the deputies erased such notions of anti-state activity as actions against Russia's constitutional regime, souvereignity, and territorial and political unity.
A new article was also introduced to the Penal Code for those who by various means extract the state secrets: such criminals will either be fined for up to RUB 500,000 (~$17,000) or sentenced to up to 4 years in prison.
