The Ministry of Transportation is happy to ban duty free alcohol aboard the planes in Russia.
Although it will be possible to buy alcohol in the duty-free areas in airports, passengers will have to give liquors to the flight attendants who will look after the bags during the flight.
Equally, representatives of Russian airlines suggested to disallow passengers to keep with them alcohol bought on the plane. These "hot" purchases will also be kept in a secure place until the landing.
Such extreme measures come in a bid to protect other passengers and crew from those travellers who cannot contain alcohol well. At least one airline reported around 1000 occasions in the last year and a half when drunk passengers threatened the on-board security. This is especially true for long flights, over 10 hours.
Presently drunk passengers are fined RUB 1000 ($33); previously this was mere RUB 100 ($3). With airplane tickets being at least 3,5 times dearer, it is unlikely that any amount of financial penalty may set the offenders on the path to correction. Russian airlines have to find alternative ways to protect passengers.
