The Curonian Spit, or Kurshskaya Kosa, as it’s known in Russia, located in the westernmost Kaliningrad Region, was the site of a special tourist & recreation economic area set up on 3 February 2007.
It’s a unique natural reserve, with a fine mix of luxurious pristine beaches and pine forests. The waters are teeming with fish, woods are home to numerous species of birds and sand hills are a magnificent sight.
In 2000, it was put on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
But even as the government drafted up a plan for future infrastructure and a blueprint for the area’s development, it failed to attract a single private investor who would be ready to work with the authorities to tap on the huge tourist potential of the spit.
