The museum project "Exhibition of one picture" gives us a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the works of art that have not left the storeroom of the Radischev museum for decades. This painting was donated to the museum in 1906 by Vladimir Mikhailovich Kozlov, previously it was in possession in the estate of the count S. M. Kamensky in Orel region.
The painting has combined several stories related to Christmas. All signs of Christmas are present on the painting: the Star of Bethlehem shines over the Child and His Mother, the ox and the donkey stand beside the poor crib, above them are the angels, full of joy. On admission to the museum the picture was mistakenly recorded as a work of Raphael Mengs (1728-1779), a German painter of the XVIII century working in the classical style, who preferred drawing to colorful painting. This picture indeed delights the eye with its amazing colours. It was painted in the second half of the XVI century in Venice.
