The Deputy Head of the State Duma's Committee for Defense, Tatyana Moskalkova of the Just Russia faction, has introduced the proposal to call up Russian women for military service.
The new legislation is expected to leave the final decision with the woman as to whether or not she wants to be drafted into the military. According to the law's authors, it will also open doors for those women who want the opportunity to receive a military education, possibly even accepting a long-term military career. It will also help to create developed medical and psychological services.
Currently, the one-year national military service in Russia is obligatory for all males aged 18-27. Women can study at military departments or serve as contract servicemen.
