A judge of the Supreme Court of the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan was killed in city of Makhachkala on Tuesday.

An investigation is currently underway. According to the first results, Magomed Magomedov was shot down by an unknown person, probably a hired assassin, when crossing the street at 20:00 Moscow ime on Tuesday, January 15. The judge died of wounds.

The Investigative Committee said the judge could have been killed because of his professional activity. He had often heard cases of militants and local terrorists.

The Islamist insurgency has recently grown bigger in several republics of the North Caucasus. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the republics of Dagestan and Ingushetia, as well as in Kabardino-Balkaria.
