Old Ladoga Protests Against Monument to Rurik
Old Ladoga

Inhabitants of Old Ladoga have started a petition against installation of a monument to the 1150th anniversary of statehood.

The monument is expected to be located in Varyazhskaya Street, near the fortress of Old Ladoga.

Opponents of the sculpture installation carry out petition on the Internet site democrator.ru. It is supposed that the monument can be dedicated to Prince Rurik as the first governor of Russia.

In October the regional authorities declared a competition for the best project of a monument to the 1150th anniversary since the origin of the Russian statehood. Thus, among competitive sketches there were projects of monuments both with the image of Rurik, and without it. The commission headed by the governor of the Leningrad Region till February 15 has to choose the winner.

Dwellers of Old Ladoga negatively faced the region authorities’ initiative.  In their opinion, one of the oldest streets of the settlement cannot give space to such a monument.

“Any of the offered projects destroys the historical shape of Varyazhskaya Street, intruding into the bank of the small Ladozhka River as an embankment suggested in projects in this or that way” — opponents of the monument explain their standpoint.
