The scientists of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) examine the structure of the brain of a mammoth for the first time in the world. The study will identify the differences and commonalities between elephants and mammoths.
The working material will be the brain of the mammoth named Yuka found in Yakutia in 2010. The animal is well-preserved until our times due to its stay in the permafrost. The removal of the brain is a lengthy and painstaking process. The brain will be conserved inside the skull for a few weeks, then it will be pulled out through a neat incision in the skull. The study of the brain will be conducted by the leading physiologists of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences with the active participation of the Yakut scientists and the specialists of the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
