A month ago the Russian film director Alexey Balabanov publicly offered Emir Kusturica collaboration over a movie about young Joseph Stalin.
According to Balabanov, the film is dedicated to unknown facts from life of the future leader of the USSR, in particular, to the fact that Joseph Dzhugashvili was allegedly “a thief in law” as a youth.
Making comments on the invitation of his Russian colleague, Emir Kusturica told: “Balabanov’s idea is good, but we will see whether it will be implemented by me. It is a very difficult, complex question - Stalin’s role, Stalin’s identity... It is a drama, it is interesting, but it is very difficult for me to evade sharp political coloring of this project. It is politics”.
“I make all the movies out of love, but I cannot apply this principle to Stalin”, - Emir Kusturica emphasized, having added that “Stalin’s subject becomes very interesting in the West”.
