On Tuesday, Russian investigators said they were ending a criminal probe into the 2009 death of lawyer Sergey Magnitsky in a Moscow jail as they had come to the conclusion that no crime had taken place.

A statement released by the Investigative Committee says that “no objective data about any crime committed against Sergei Magnitsky have been established.”

Magnitsky was arrested in 2008 on charges of tax evasion shortly after he accused Russian officials of a $230 million fraud scheme. He died in a preventive-detention cell, his relatives and lawyers were convinced that was a result of beating and the denial of medical assistance.

However, according to the Investigative Committee's press release, Magnitsky's death was of a natural cause, as he had "an acute heart failure and cerebral and pulmonary edema with acute hemorrhaging that developed in connection with ventricular fibrillation". Moreover, as it is stressed in the statement, Magnitsky was held in detention lawfully and his prison conditions were decent.

Magnitsky’s family dismissed the investigators’ explanation in a statement released by Hermitage Capital.
