Monument to Translator of Maya Language to Appear in Petersburg
Yury Knorozov

A monument to the outstanding researcher Yury Knorozov will be set up in St. Petersburg.

He was the first-ever person to manage to decipher writings of ancient Maya, and made it without even moving away from Leningrad (St. Petersburg). The historian used only documents and photos of hieroglyphs of the indigenous people of America.

He wrote poetry and played the violin, studied at the History Department of the Moscow State University, and went through war. But one of Yury Knorozov's major merits was that he deciphered the Maya language before. Besides, he investigated the origin of Indians and was engaged in decoding of writing of a number of dead languages of Asia. “What was created by one human mind, cannot but be solved by another one”— that was the belief of the great scientist, who worked in the Leningrad Kunstkamera Museum for most of his life.

The monument will depict a wall with inscriptions in the Russian, Spanish and Mayan languages telling about the biography of the outstanding historian of the 20th century and his discoveries.
