April 9 will see the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Lilya Brik and her Renault car in Moscow.
Alexander Rodchenko’s exposition Lilya Brik. Non-performed Journey is remarkable for the fact that the author’s attention is focused on the Renault retrocar.
Lilya’s boyfriend – the outstanding poet Vladimir Mayakovsky - brought her the gray-black Renault from France in 1928. Specially for the sake of it Lilya Brik got a driving license, bought a special dress and a suit for driving, and ordered a hat and gloves from Paris.
The photographer Alexander Rodchenko asked her to have her picture taken with her new car, and so, when planning a visit to Leningrad, Lilya Brik agreed to the photoshoot. However, bad roads — a persistent Russian problem — prevented her reaching Leningrad; for this reason he journey was called “non-performed”.
