Gas Museum to Appear in St. Petersburg

The vice governor of Petersburg Vasily Kichedzhi has held a meeting on the issue of establishing the Gas Industry Museum.

The press release of the meeting points out that the choice of St. Petersburg is not accidental, because it was here where the engineer Peter Sobolevsky created Russia’s first unit for production of gas lighting in 1811. Here the history of domestic gas lighting begins. In Petersburg there are monuments of architecture associated with early stages of development of gas industry.

An additional argument for creation of the museum is that headquarters of the Gazprom gas company are located in the city. Now the authorities are looking for the premise to house the museum: various sites, including historical buildings of gas-holders of the second half of the 19th century are being considered. These buildings are a private property.
