Active introduction of alternative energy is one of the most important directions of investment activity development in the Irkutsk Region.

The insolation in the Irkutsk Region is equal to the insolation in Sochi. For example, the Baikal island Olkhon counts for 85% of sunny days in a year, that has allowed to build an ecologically clear solar power-station (the first in Siberia).  Its peculiarity consists in the possibility to work together with automatic diesel-engine power plant that is launched when the wind and solar energies are not enough. In future, the regional government plans to build a heat electro power station near the Baikal pulp and a paper mill that will process its noxious waste, for example, slime, tens of tons of which are located at Baikal Lake shore.
