Russia's consumer rights watchdog has rejected the bid for five cognac brands that Georgia's Askaneli Brothers firm sought to export to Russia.

The Federal Service for the Supervision of Consumer Rights and Welfare cited poor quality and inappropriate formula as the reason for rejection.

Georgian producers of wine, liquor and mineral water have been waiting to return to the Russian market since 2006 when ties between the two countries hit a record low under President Saakashvili.

But in 2012, the opposition won in parliamentary election and installed its prime minister who is seeking to repair mutual relations.

Amid this thaw, the Russian authorities began considering requests from Georgian producers.
