Fyodor Konyukhov and Viktor Simonov who are currently undertaking an expedition from Karelia via North Pole to Greenland plan to reach terra ferma.
The expedition was forced off the course due to the approaching cyclone, with the windforce exceeding 40 knots. With heavy snowfalls looming, Canadian scientists recommended the team to stop and continue their journey after the cyclone passed.
On May 21 that was for the first time celebrated in Russia as the Day of the Polar Explorer Konyukhov and Simonov had to brave strong winds and drifting ice to get to the land as close as possible. At one point the ice floe on which the explorers were travelling broke in two, with Konyukhov and Simonov each staying on a separate side. Eventually they managed to get to the same ice floe and continued their journey. Altogether they marched 15km of ice and water in one day.
The expedition was expected to reach the land by May 22. In Konyukhov's words. they went off the course, so it was important to set their feet on the soil practically anywhere to correct the course and continue the journey.
