The government has slashed its expenditures on the 2018 World Cup, says the Itar-Tass news agency.

This is the lowest estimate provided by the Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko, Itar-Tass quoted deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov as saying.

Earlier, Standard & Poor's has put the price tag of hosting the major international football event at 1.258 trillion roubles, or $40 billion.
