The scientists will reconstruct the route of Ivanov, the discoverer of Lake Baikal.
Enthusiasts and scientists riding 6 cars will start for an expedition from different parts of the country – Komi, Vladivostok, Moscow and Moscow Oblast – to collect all data and to recover the route of lake discoverer. At the end of July-beginning of August 20 crew members – historians, pedagogues, journalists and automobilists – will meet on Olkhon Island. According to official information, Baikal Lake was discovered 370 years ago by a Russian voyager Kurbat Ivanov.
However, information regarding his biography and his voyage to the deepest freshwater lake is full of gaps which should be filled up by the expedition. There is only couple of articles concerning Ivanov, while his personality was not inferior to Semyon Dezhnyov. It is known that Kurbat Ivanov, the discoverer of Lake Baikal was born in 17th century and originally was a Tobolsk Cossack. During his service he accomplished many marches through unknown Siberean lands and left behind a few maps of the region.
