Verkhoturye Customs - the City Plunged into the Past

Verkhoturye celebrated its 415th birthday. The city plunged into the past on this day.

      Shooters, the Don Cossacks, fur traders and medieval robbers gathered on the square of Verkhoturye Kremlin where they held the festival of historical reconstruction “Verkhoturye Customs”.

      The organizers recreated a day from the life of Verhoturskaya fortress at the beginning of its existence in late XVI - early XVII centuries. The town of Verkhoturye was founded in 1598 as a stockaded town, which later became the main fortress and customs on the way to Siberia.

      Verkhoturye Customs brought a quarter of the total revenue to the state treasury. In memory of this history the festival of historical reconstruction was timed to coincide with the town`s anniversary.
