The International Music Day was established on October 1, 1975 by a UNESCO decree. The Russian composer Dmitry Shostakovich was one of its initiators.
The festive day organized by the International Music Council aims at spreading music in all the layers of society and implementing the ideals peace and friendship among peoples, development of cultures, sharing experiences and mutual respect of aesthetic values.
Russia first celebrated the International Music Day in 1996 and timed it to the 90th anniversary since birth of the outstanding composer Dmitr Shostakovich, who was one of the initiators of this holiday.
The beautiful holiday is celebrated on a large scale. Best music ensembles and performers give concerts and rare music instruments are exhibited.
October 1 is annually marked with a marathon concert in the St. Petersburg Shostakovich Academic Philharmonics. For a few hours the audience enjoys a variety of short concerts in diverse music genres and styles.
