Monument To The Cat The Traveler Erected In Murmansk

A new monument emerged in Murmansk. The sculpture portrays a cat with a knapsack, sitting on a bronze bench. The cat along with the bench weighs 120 kg. The monument was unveiled at the entrance to the amusement park on Lake Semyonovskoye.

This monument is dedicated to the cat Semyon. According to an urban legend, in 1990s, cat Simon who got lost in Moscow covered a distance of 2,000 km getting back home in Murmansk. Sinishin’s family, the owners of the cat, accompanied with the animal were returning back from vacation through Moscow. The loss of the pet was detected on the way and they did not return.

Cat Semyon reached his home in 6.5 years. Every day he covered no less than a kilometer.

The city head Alexey Veller expressed the hope that the monument will become favorite holiday destination for Murmansk folks, and tradition of "toying with cat's ears" will take hold and catch the fancy not of northerners only, but city visitors as well.
