Bonhams Auction House to Display Paintings by Falk and Roerich in Moscow
Kanchenjunga by Nicholas Roerich

An exhibition of artworks to be sold by the Bonhams Auction in the Russian Week in London will be opened in Moscow from November 7.

Among the auction’s top lots that will be exhibited in Moscow there are paintings by Robert Falk, Nicholas Roerich, Konstantin Makovsky, Lev Lagorio and others. All the canvasses are exclusively of Provenance, which collectors started paying special attention after the crisis of 2008.

Thus, Robert Falk’s original portrait Woman in Lilac, which is estimated at 1-1.5 million pounds, comes from Abram Chudnovsky’s famous collection. In post-war Leningrad this collection was considered the third in importance after collections of the Hermitage and the Russian Museum.

Another example is Nicholas Roerich’s vivid landscape Kanchenjunga that has been estimated at 800 thousand-1.2 million pounds. It was purchased directly from the artist and then was kept in the hands of a single person from 1936 to 1998.

Interesting is also the story of Alexey Bogolyubov’s landscape Road along the Sound Coast (estimate of 150-250 thousand pounds). This work was ordered to the artist by the grand duke Alexander Aleksandrovich, the future Emperor of Russia Alexander III, during his stay in Denmark in summer of 1867.

Lev Lagorio’s both artworks - The View of Elbrus and The Caucasian Landscape (each of them estimated at 100-120 thousand pounds) - were purchased from the artist by Carl Emil Weber in the 1880s, and have been demised since then.
