The State Museum-Reserve “Gatchina” will open the exhibition of only one exhibit “Match your Great great-grandfather…” representing the “Portrait of Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich as a Child”. “Portrait of Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich as a Child” is the masterpiece flowed from the brush of an eminent Russian artist, founder of Russian school of academic painting A.P. Losenko.
Among many portraits of young Pavel, son of the Empress Catherine II, the work of Anton Pavlovich Losenko is the most distinguished one. And it is not only for undisputed artistic qualities of the picture. First of all, it is not just the image of young heir to the Russian throne, but also a vivid portrait of the era: painting dates from the year of 1763, the time of the reign of Catherine II, who set the course to the succession of Peter the Great’s policy. A line from the "Ode on the birthday of His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Paul Petrovich" by M. V. Lomonosov serves as a title of the exhibition. Author foretells the heir to the throne continuation of glorious achievements of Peter the Great: “Grow, grow, grow stronger, Match your Great great-grandfather, Ascend at our desire”.
The exhibition is open until March, 2014.
