On October 25 the Nashi Khudozhniki Gallery will open the first exhibition of Leonid Chupyatov, a little-known disciple of Petrov-Vodkin.
A colleague and disciple of Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Leonid Chupyatov, according to numerous art researchers, drew ahead of his teacher in creation of synthetic painting, which was meant to blend both 19th century realism and avant-garde movements, both traditional folk drawing and iconography.
Works by Leonid Chupyatov are not as recognizable and characteristic as Petrov-Vodkin’s Bathing of a Red Horse, but the coherence of their paintings is obvious. Unfortunately, Leonid Chupyatov with his family was lost in blockade Leningrad and so did not live to see his fame. However, now collectors hunt for his canvasses, and those few fragments of his creativity that survived the war are improbably highly prized.
The exhibition will run till December 22.
