Monument to Song Character Set up on Lake Baikal

A monument to the character of the Russian folk song On Wild Steppes of Transbaikalia – the Maverick – has appeared at the viewing point over the Kurkutsky Gulf of Lake Baikal.

As the administration of the Olkhon District reports, the sculpture was set up in the early October upon the initiative of the municipality mayor Sergey Kopylov, however, the official unveiling did not take place.

The 4-meter high monument is made of bronze.  Next to the sculpture there stands a cross and a marble slab with the lyrics carved in it.

The district administration points out that it is no mere chance that the monument has been set up near Baikal.  The lyrics are directly associated with it:  “The Maverick approaches Lake Baikal, takes the fishing boat and starts a sad song and sings something about the Homeland”.
